Behind The Library
James Riotto, part-owner of Altamira Sound, knows this piano inside and out. As both its owner and the recording engineer, he set up a custom mic configuration that captured the piano’s deep, resonant character, especially through the sub mics he placed at the base of the piano. His familiarity with both the piano and the room made sure every note stayed faithful to its unique, rebuilt 1900 character.
Concept
We set out to create a piano library that felt real—one that embraced the natural character and quirks of a well-loved instrument. This Fischer upright from 1900 was completely disassembled and rebuilt, piece by piece, using both original and custom parts.
That’s what makes it special: it’s lived over a century, and the care that went into rebuilding it makes it truly one-of-a-kind. We knew we needed a piano with real personality, and this one delivers. The result is a simple, plug-and-play library that lets the piano’s natural beauty shine through, just as it was meant to.
Recording
We recorded the piano over two consecutive days, with Kirsten playing, James engineering, and Thomas overseeing from the booth. The piano was captured using vintage microphones and a vintage API Legacy console, staying true to the piano’s own vintage roots.
Altamira Sound, located in Alhambra, CA, provided the perfect setting, with its spacious tracking room allowing the piano to fully resonate.
