Why we made it.

Because we knew there were more ways to use a double bass

We asked double bassist Jules Levy what sounds he loved but rarely got asked to play, then spent eight hours at Hollywood Scoring in Los Angeles following those ideas wherever they led.

Sometimes that meant asking Jules to bow different parts of the instrument and listening to what each part brought out. Other times, we asked him to morph between techniques and let the movement between them become part of the sound. Some of the simplest experiments became our favourite recordings.

For DESPAIR, we chose the recordings where that exploration produced colder, more restrained tension, then shaped them into five playable sounds. The tension was already in the performances; our job was to preserve it and make it playable.
