At Hollywood Scoring in Los Angeles, we spent a day with session musician Jules Levy exploring the double bass beyond straightforward playing techniques, focusing on sounds that shifted, scraped and fluctuated as they sustained.

Why we made it.

We went looking for the double bass’s less predictable side

Rather than smoothing fluctuations out, we used them as the character of the instrument.

Working with engineer Adam Michalak, we captured that movement through the session and shaped the recordings into five playable sounds. The result is low-end material with gravity already inside it, but enough internal movement to keep the bass alive without having to build interest from extra layers.
