Score the space between one emotional beat and the next

WHISPERS is built for emotionally fragile, in-between moments that can be some of the hardest to score. Five processed viola textures preserve the air, rosin and natural movement of the performances, so they can hold a feeling, ease into or out of a cue, or leave a little tension hanging without pushing the scene forward too quickly. Hold a single note for an exposed, delicate solo, or layer them into a dreamy texture with continuous, natural movement.

Choose from five performances, balance the Close and Far mics, then shape the envelope, space, tuning and level. Keep the bow, rosin and air detailed and close, or move the sound back and soften it into layers of texture.

Why we made it.

We knew a viola was perfect for unguarded moments

During the three-day session in Los Angeles, Hailey experimented with bow pressure, harmonics, quieter dynamics and bowing on or close to the bridge to find sounds with the character we were after. We only kept material that genuinely sounded like a whisper at source.

From there, we selected the most naturally whisper-like parts of the recordings and emphasised the rosin and air, shifted and blended sounds together, and discarded anything that lost the effect. The final five sounds all individually represent whispers in their own way.
