DUSK turns sustained bass clarinet improvisations into five playable sounds with warmth, breath and constant fluctuation. They behave more like brooding textures than conventional woodwind parts. These aren’t mock-up articulations waiting to be replaced by a live player; they’re finished sounds designed to stay in the score. Use them underneath a cue, expose them on their own or push them further into hybrid territory.

Choose from five performances, move between Clean and Dark, then shape the envelope, space, tuning and level. Keep the player clear and recognisable, or darken the sound until its source becomes more ambiguous.

Why we made it.

Made with a clarinetist who thinks like a composer

Composer and clarinetist Brandon C. Stanley recorded DUSK over several weeks in his Chicago studio, using the bass clarinet and recording setup he knows through his own compositional work. He explored the kinds of sounds he would actually want to reach for in a score, rather than trying to represent every side of the instrument.

That meant following ideas because they were musically useful, not because they filled a conventional articulation slot. We shaped the strongest experiments into five playable sounds: UNEVEN, WAVES, WOBBLES, BENDS and GROWLS.
