“Sever is a deep dive into the darkest, most unexpected possibilities of the upright bass. Endless sounds to explore: scrapes, scratches and atonal chaos, perfect for quickly ratcheting up the tension. This will definitely find its way into the horror or true crime projects we regularly work on.”

Not one-shots. Horror performances made playable.

SEVER was our first recording session in Berlin, and the first time we built a session around long-form improvisation and visual references rather than short, repeated takes.

A hybrid double-bass language that mutates with the story.

Recorded at two levels of intensity, UNEASE and RUPTURE provide one naturally restless voice to carry an entire horror score from opening disquiet to a visceral climax. Built from extended improvisations inspired by recognisable horror-film moments, contemporary double-bass gestures unfold as one idea rather than isolated techniques, forming a malleable foundation for modern horror scoring.

Dissect the sound. Direct the tension.

Every articulation pairs a Core sound with a different but complementary More sound. Use either on its own or blend the two, then move between Close / Far and Clean / Dark before shaping the result with the low-pass filter, reverb, delay, EQ, envelope, tuning and level. The performance gives you character and substance. The interface gives you the tools to make it sound like you.

Before the session, Thomas photographed details in nature that captured the kind of horror we wanted SEVER to explore. We separated the images into lower- and higher-intensity mood boards, which stayed visible throughout the session as visual prompts for each improvisation.

Kirsten would describe a mood and sound quality, James would suggest and demonstrate techniques that could produce it, and together we chose what to explore. Each brief then became more specific, for example: five minutes of improvisation with high density and gesture, low volume, and two selected techniques.

This gave James time to stay with one idea, letting techniques change, collide and develop as part of one continuous musical thought. Those combinations and progressions gave SEVER its horror character, and became what we worked hardest to preserve.

We then cut and recombined sections from within each improvisation to build SEVER’s playable notes and round robins. Keeping every edit within its original performance turned that stream of consciousness into something playable without reducing it to fixed one-shots. The character of James’s performances stays intact, without narrowing your choices to a handful of fixed gestures that decide too much for you.
