A less familiar way of colouring tension

We recorded the viola up close to capture the bow and rosin at its most tactile, then deliberately left that physical detail in the sounds. The result is tension with a rough, resistant edge, giving you another colour to reach for when a dark pad, drone or low string layer feels too familiar, or simply not like you.

Choose from five performances, balance the Close and Far mics, then shape the envelope, space, tuning and level. Bring the rough detail forward when you want the viola exposed, or push it back until that friction becomes part of the atmosphere around the cue.

Why we made it.

We wanted the viola to carry the character for once

That meant finding character in the performance itself. Thomas paired playing techniques that aren’t usually combined, Hailey tested them, and they refined the combinations until they found something exciting to record.

Recorded in Los Angeles, every FRICTION articulation is an improvisation between two of those techniques. Rather than playing one fixed articulation, Hailey moves between the pair as the sound unfolds.
