Why we made it.

we didn’t build ANGST from a checklist of extended techniques.

Extended techniques can make a cello sound unusual, but that alone doesn’t make it a statement. For ANGST, we built the session around Christopher Brown’s physical, forceful playing, developing bends, accents and heavy waves that he threw his whole body into.

Christopher’s background in black metal meant he was already comfortable playing with aggression and making bold musical statements. Over two days in Los Angeles, we had time to test and develop ideas as we went rather than work through a checklist of standard techniques.

That physicality stayed in the recordings. We deliberately preserved the rosin, bow noise and other natural cello sounds rather than polishing the performances clean.

The performances themselves didn’t need much transformation. Beyond a standard mix, tasteful denoising and trimming, the main job was curation. We recorded more material than we used, then narrowed it down to the five performances with the strongest identity.
