about

Bring human presence into the quietest parts of a score

UNRAVEL captures the fragile, human side of the viola through rosin, breath and improvisational movement. It can sit exposed like a voice or work as a subtle layer, adding presence to quiet writing without needing to be loud.

interface

Bring the vulnerable humanity forward or let it recede

Choose from five performances, balance the Close and Far mics, then shape the envelope, space, tuning and level. Bring the rasp and physical detail forward, or soften it into a quieter layer that sits behind the cue.

Narrowing the full palette of recordings down to the final five sounds was the biggest part of creating UNRAVEL. We selected, manipulated and processed the original viola material to preserve the qualities we were drawn to in each performance and bring the five sounds into the same emotional world.
