For when a pristine piano says too much of the wrong thing

REBUILT captures the familiarity of piano without the polished, anonymous finish. Recorded from an 1880s Fischer upright, its warmth, irregularity and personality make it at home in intimate drama, crime and hybrid scores where a concert piano can feel too grand. Choose Original to stay closest to the instrument, or Tape for a more processed starting point. Keep it recognisably piano, or use it as the starting point for something less conventional.

Move between Original and Tape, then balance the Close, Sub and Room mics. Keep Close forward for intimacy, or bring in Sub and Room for more low-end depth and a broader, more cinematic sound. Why we made it.

We didn’t want just another piano, we wanted THIS piano

The Fischer upright dates back to the 1880s. It was later rebuilt with its internal parts replaced, while the original wood and soundboard were kept, leaving us with an instrument that carried both its history and a second life.

We recorded it with James Riotto at Altamira Sound in Los Angeles, capturing Close, Sub and Room perspectives to reveal different characteristics of the same instrument. Up close you hear the physical detail of the upright; the Sub and Room recordings open it out into something bolder, weightier and more gripping.
